Sujay Sanan (b. 1983) is an Indian artist living in Cape Town, South Africa. His work, a protracted meditation on the relationships between the human and the more than human, raises questions about nature, ecology, identity, power, relationality and inter-dependence. Sanan applies a contemporary and political lens to the South Asian artistic traditions that inspire him, invoking rich cultural symbolism and referencing multiple aesthetic lineages including the Pahari traditions of North India and Thangka Buddhist aesthetics. Since 2016, Sanan has had five solo exhibitions in Cape Town, South Africa, and participated in a number of group shows, both in South Africa and internationally. He has collaborated with partners like Wavescape and the WWF to raise funds for conservation through his artworks. His drawing of a Southern Right whale and her calf was selected to be a part of South Africa’s 4th decimal circulation coins launched in 2023, and is now impressed on the 5 rand coin. In India, Sanan has exhibited at Art & Charlie and the India Art Fair.
