Mohammed Thajudeen Fathima Rukshana (b. 1989) is a multidisciplinary artist and activist from Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in 2016 from the Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies, Eastern University of Sri Lanka, where she later served as a temporary lecturer in the Department of Visual and Technological Arts from 2016 to 2018. She completed her Master’s of Art and Design Studies at Beaconhouse. National University, Lahore, Pakistan.
Rukshana’s practice critically examines gender bias within marginalised narratives, with a particular focus on women’s lived experiences. Her work addresses women’s position in society, the tensions between Sri Lankan citizenship and Sri Lankan Muslim social expectations , and the psychological damage caused by the loss of individual freedoms. Central to her practice is an exploration of the lengths women go to reclaim autonomy and selfhood. She has exhibited widely, including at the Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa; Tolworth Recreation Centre, London, UK; Colomboscope; Warehouse421, Mina Zayed, UAE; and the India Art Fair, Delhi.
