Tawaifs and women performers historically wore a reputation that tainted them and made their life difficult. They do not get enough credit for their most valuable contribution to Indian Culture - their music! Through beautiful renditions of thumri, dadra, hori, jhoola, chaiti, ghazal and so on, the artists trace the evolution of this beautiful genre that gained popularity through their performances.
About the Artists
Avanti Patel is a Hindustani classical, semi-classical, vocalist, composer and playback singer. She holds an MA in Hindustani Classical Vocals from SNDT University and holds a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from St Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She has received taaleem from Vidushi Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande of the Jaipur Atrauli Gharana. She has also been on Indian Idol 10 in the top 9.
Her aim is to speak about relevant sociological issues, especially those related to gender, in her performances.
Rutuja Lad
A promising young Hindustani classical vocalist, Rutuja formerly learnt from Pandita Dhondutai Kulkarni of of Jaipur Atrauli Gharana. She is currently a visiting faculty at SNDT women’s university and is the disciple of Vidushi Dr Ashwini Bhide Deshpande
Akshay Jadhav
Disciple of Pandit Suresh Talwalkar ji, he has played for several Bollywood films like Kalank, Tiger Zinda Hai and many more
Ejaz Hussain
Disciple of Ustad Sabri Khan and Kamal Sabri Khan, Ejaz has taken the family tradition forward by bringing Sarangi to the 3rd generation in his family.
Nusrat Apoorva
Disciple and son of Shri Mukund Petkar, Apoorva is a multitalented musician and composer.
