About The Reading Social
Reading is a solitary endeavour, but once we finish a book, most of us want to do the same thing: talk to other people about what we loved, what we disliked, and what we didn't understand. The Reading Social is 90 minutes of collective reading in silence followed by a sharing circle. The idea is simple: to bring the joy of reading alone AND the best kind of social meet-ups. There's so much beauty in “and”. Books AND Coffee. A space for me AND us!
This is unlike a conventional book club; in the first 90 minutes, someone is reading poetry, mystery, a short story, comics, classics, a memoir, and even a recipe book. After the reading time is over, they join the reflection circle. As screens with sponsored content and algorithms designed to maximize clicks and taps decide what we read and believe in, it's not just the publishing industry that will change; the readers might too. The Reading Social is rooted in diversity; we encourage you to listen in the sharing circle when someone shares what they read, not just to expand our reading possibilities but to cultivate greater tolerance and empathy.
