A live movement and performance piece that reflects on the body in darkness.
What can we see and infer in the dark? Can we feel movement instead of simply seeing it? An immersive experience as the audience lights the performer’s bodies to bring the performance they see into the light.
About the Artist
Gia has developed a practice that embraces hybridity and combines her roles of performance artist, filmmaker, somatic practitioner and educator.
Her need to craft ways of ‘experiencing’ forms the basis of her engagement with art as a sensory, ephemeral and physical experience, even when watched across a screen. Her practice exists to develop and hone her own eye and the viewers to fall into empathy, intimacy and vulnerability while viewing work.
Her documentary Dekho Main Hoon featuring Navtej Singh Johar’s somatic movement practice was an experiment in creating an immersive experience with the camera, as go pro’s find their way onto a dancers body, enabling the moving body to truly film. The film screened at BIDF, IN/Motion Chicago and Auro Apaar dance film festival.
Through her childhood, she trained in Odissi and during her undergraduate studies at Ashoka University began reconfiguring her relationship to classical dance and question- rehearsal vs performance, form vs feeling, and repetition vs improvisation. Her performance work is now an amalgamation of theater, movement, classical dance and performance art. She has performed at Girnar Festival Gujarat, ISCKON Mumbai, Yoga Pela Paz, Brazil, Kathiwada City house, Method, Soho House, Magnetic Fields Festival, Rajasthan.
Her 16mm short Andar Bahar on a drag queen was supported by Harkat Studio and screened at Serendipity Arts Festival. Gia has been featured in “Women on the Rise’ by Vogue Italia, ‘Gia and her Fire’ by Femina and Alma Mag.
