Were our childhood experiences really as wholesome as we remember them to be? Why do our minds periodically self-select memories that overshadow the unsavoury ones? Rosy – happy memories seem fulfilling while the intractable ones emote an intense vulnerability which we eagerly hide away well beyond our fortified walls of self-preservation.
Sajid’s depiction of the famous animated character draws on the complex duality of childhood, where the good and the bad seem to enjoy their malleable and disputed co-existence. Wax crayons exude an undeniably youthful warmth which the artist skilfully uses to help his viewers make a deeper connection with their own childhood.
